Magna Tram Train Station Award Win
Award recognition
AmcoGiffen’s delivery of the new step-free, accessible Magna Tram Train station, carried out on behalf of Network Rail and SYMCA, has won Infrastructure Project of the Year at the CIHT Yorkshire and Humber Awards. The scheme was also highly commended in the Outstanding Project category at both the Spotlight Rail North Awards and the CECA Yorkshire and Humber Awards.
Separately, Site Engineer Amy Stevenson was highly commended in the Emerging Talent category at the CIHT Yorkshire and Humber Awards, and in the Going the Extra Mile category at the 2026 CECA Yorkshire and Humber Awards.
The Magna scheme combined modern construction methods, collaborative stakeholder management, innovative design, risk management, and quality and safety assurance to deliver the project safely, on time and on budget. Detailed design was followed by onsite construction from March 2025, and the station entered service in April 2026.
Single-source delivery
The recognition reflects AmcoGiffen’s turnkey, direct delivery model for Access for All (AfA) schemes and wider accessible station projects. Early contractor involvement, multi-disciplinary design, in-house steel fabrication, civil engineering and construction, mechanical, electrical and telecoms work, and planning and stakeholder engagement all sit within AmcoGiffen. Clients get a single accountable partner, fewer interfaces and greater efficiency.
It takes collaboration, innovation, knowledge and experience to make sure every component can be built within the access available, minimising disruption and getting it right first time.
A collaborative approach
Accessible station schemes work best when everyone is involved early. AmcoGiffen brings designers, fabricators, site teams and clients together from the outset, so that buildability, cost certainty, safety, sustainability and ways to minimise disruption are considered together.
Sharing what we learn
Behind each scheme sits AmcoGiffen’s AfA Steering Group, bringing together regional AfA leads and technical leads from design, fabrication, civil, electrical, telecoms, planning and commercial teams. The group shares lessons from every scheme, and AmcoGiffen also contributes to Network Rail’s national AfA working group. Experience gained on one scheme in one region is built into the next.
Access for All and broader accessible station schemes are complex multi-disciplinary projects on a live railway. Being highly commended for Magna shows what happens when design, fabrication and construction teams work as one with our clients. Our AfA steering group makes sure that what we learn on each scheme is built into the next
Recognising emerging talent
Amy Stevenson joined AmcoGiffen as a graduate engineer in 2023 and was promoted to site engineer for the Magna scheme. Alongside her engineering role, she mentored apprentices and work experience students and supported 18 STEM sessions that reached 470 children and young people. She also chairs the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Early Careers Network.
Peter Laws described her development on Magna as exceptional, praising her determination to go beyond her role and help others see they have a place in the industry.
Looking ahead
With more accessible station upgrades planned across the UK, Magna shows what AmcoGiffen’s full-service delivery model can do: one team, driving innovation and collaboration and sharing lessons learnt to deliver complex schemes on time, on budget and right first time.
